Our Mission
Books to Benefit is a local 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization passionately working to support literacy. The proceeds of our annual book sales benefit local literacy programs, including STAR Adult Literacy and YouthBuild McLean County’s literacy programs, provide financial support for the Books to Benefit Community Service Scholarship award at Heartland Community College, encourage volunteerism through community service, and assure that works of scholarly importance and/or unusual publication history or content find appropriate homes offering ready access to these works.
How It All Works
Through the efforts of our volunteers, we collect donations from our community drop boxes (conveniently located throughout Bloomington-Normal, Illinois). Donated items become the exclusive property of Books to Benefit.
Donate gently used (in good condition) books and media from spring cleaning, downsizing, moving, and garage sales. Donations are tax deductible and benefit local literacy programs with the proceeds earned from semi-annual book sales.
With your support, in the past few years we have been able to support local literacy programs with cash and in-kind gifts totaling more than $50,000!
Every book sale we appreciate donations to help raise money for our annual gifts of two $500 Heartland Community College Foundation Scholarships for a non-traditional student. It is an honor and a pleasure to meet the recipients at the Heartland Annual Reception.
As mentioned before, we clear our shelves after each sale. Where do the books go, you may wonder? We work with some outside agencies that give "saleable" books another chance and recycle those that don't, helping to keep them out of landfills.
